graphic novel is so stinkin' cute. Hilda is a great lead character, a spunky,
adventuring girlchild. You think the salt-lions and the rat-king are
cute until you see the super, super cute Bird Parade, which i would love
to attend. A sweet, fun story for all ages.

This two-book set is an interesting examination of the Boxer Rebellion from the perspective of a young Boxer (Boxers) and a young Christian (Saints). Their interwoven stories don't provide answers, but they do make for interesting reading and discussion! The art is gorgeous, as to be expected from Yang. The interplay between living and mythic characters is compelling. My main problem with Saints is the appearance of a raccoon. How'd a raccoon end up in China? My point exactly.

Not a who's who, this mind-blowing book is nothing less than a revisioning of American history. I decided i wasn't going to take notes, but midway through the first chapter i had to go back and start jotting down facts. Rife with historical heroes we should all be celebrating, this book is vital reading for anyone interested in history.

I practically specialize reading about sassy girls. This collection has some of the most bad-ass girls i've had the pleasure to read. Each of the stories is a quick glimpse of a day or two into the lives of some amazing characters. Whenever a girlchild is the narrator, the voice is strong, strong. It's really a pleasure to read Toni Cade Bambara. I'm generally not a short story reader, so this collection is definitely something special.

The Family Fang: A Novel By Kevin Wilson Cover Image

Published: Ecco - April 17th, 2012

A fun
summer read. Parts of it had me laughing out loud. Hard to tell which is funnier: the performance art pieces or the messed-up lives of the Fang children as adults. Smart and hilarious.

Half-Blood Blues: A Novel By Esi Edugyan Cover Image

Lovely and atmospheric. Set
in 1939-40 Berlin & Paris and 1992 Berlin & Poland, the jazz
setting is immediate and engaging. There is a plot woven in, dealing
with visas and betrayals, but that is less interesting than the glimpses
into war-time Europe. It's an interesting view into a subculture. One
of the characters, Delilah, trash-talks both Lil Hardin Armstrong &
Josephine Baker. I would have cut her with a bottleneck was i there. But i suppose it was
in character, so forgivable. A truly evocative read.

Despite it's inflammatory title, the characters come to the logical conclusion that - obviously - they want to be a pea. Super cute hippos and birds! Friendship tested, but true! Costumes and cross dressing! Parties! But, most importantly, sweet peas!
