'Rooted' is a deeply-researched historical analysis of Black land ownership and the many ways Black US-ians have systematically - often violently - been deprived of land. This book covers a lot of ground. I found the latter chapters on reparations and Land Back movements especially compelling. Baker also does a good job avoiding overly-romantic visions of rural and/or agrarian living; instead, offering a thoughtful structural analysis of property ownership as it relates to wealth, power, and (in both a material & symbolic sense) freedom. It's not at all a dry read, containing plenty of illustrative examples and stories, including many from the author's own family. [Adrienne]
