My reading habits swing from children’s literature and young adult to classics and nonfiction, with the occasional novel. Let me know of any good beginner graphic novels and I’ll try something new. My all-time favorite author is Frank Herbert, pulling slightly ahead of Jane Austen, along with Laura Ingalls Wilder, Barbara Kingsolver, Ursula K. Le Guin, Helen Hooven Santmyer, and Mary Stewart. Quirky investigators like Malcolm Gladwell are quickly making a place in my heart.

LeGuin’s short stories and novellas are a perfect entryway to her work. Many of her imagined worIds are interconnected, enjoyable in themselves and enhancing each other within these collections. They are groundbreaking in exploring gender, culture, and other big concepts. I once heard Ursula say she never had writer’s block. Now, we needn’t have reader’s block.  [Raissa]

John Edgar Wideman brings to light an account of Louis Till. Combining research, his own personal history, and inventive, poetic writing, Wideman leaves us with the facts of the case as well as truth that can only be reached through “fair and honest” fictions. Completely unexpected in the best possible way. [Raissa]

Not only does Polska have the expected dumplings and soups, it has harder-to-find treats like party food and cocktails. There are brief histories to provide context and it is beautiful. This is my new comfort food and entertaining guidebook all in one. [Raissa]

One of our favorite authors brings us the storied tale of King Baby. Is the King adorable? Yes. Is the King demanding? More than his subjects could have imagined. It’s a faithful account of the baby years, charming and amusing, and acknowledges the hard work of all who serve royalty. [Raissa]
