Since I was young, books have been an integral part of my life. They've provided endless escape into the fantastical when reality just didn't cut it. Fantasy has been my go to for as long as I can remember, but horror and sci-fi have trailed closely behind. As I've gotten older my preferences have expanded into anything that grabs my interest; ranging from non-fiction on niche subjects, comics, and speculative fiction as well. I adore stories with strong characters, fun concepts, morally gray everything, and just enough suffering to be entertaining. If you're ever in need of something to read that has cool magic systems & lore, engaging dialogue, characters you'll love and hate, engaging dialogue, and stories you can escape into the I'm your gal!

Upon finishing this trilogy, I sobbed for 45 minutes straight. This series has everything. A morally gray protagonist, platonic soulmates, intense action, well rounded characters, and horrific war crimes! Kuang has a lovely ability to connect readers to her characters, I occasionally forgot it was in 3rd person. She also knows how to make us suffer and I love her for it. This series changed me as a person and reader; and I'll be chasing this high for the foreseeable future. [Zephyr]

Kuang is steadily becoming one of my favorite authors. The protagonist is insufferably audacious. You've never wanted to witness someone dig their own grave more than, June. The pacing is fantastic, I read it in two sessions, and the 300 odd pages flew by. I don't think I've enjoyed an general fiction book more than Yellowface. For something set in the real world, Kuang made me feel like there were actual stakes to care about. And the pressure/stress comes right off the page. (Also, living in the mind of this character is WILD.) [Zephyr]

My favorite horror title that I've read in a while. It's best experienced going in as blind as possible. But the essentials are this: This book takes you on a truly unique experience; the structure and formatting are like nothing I've ever seen. It's a master class in obsessive details that are embodied by footnotes that tell two other stories within them. It reads like a journal, a documentary, and a dissertation. It genuinely made me uncomfortably fascinated. (Zephyr)

Have you ever wanted to escape to a subterranean magical library? Or to be swept away into a modern fairy-tale? Cause "The Starless Sea" is just that. The book is pure escapism put to paper. Morgenstern floods the whole thing with the love she has for stories and storytellers. By the end of it you'll feel as though you went there yourself and miss it wholeheartedly. (Zephyr)

Mary Shelley really knocked it out of the park here. Not only did she propagate and define early sci-fi; but she also wrote such an eloquent story about human nature, the power dynamics between created vs creator, and how humans have morals that are looser than we think. If you love the gothic and macabre this is a great short read. (Zephyr)

This book got me out of an awful reading slump. I finished it in a day cause I just couldn't put it down. I'm a sucker for a story told through journal entries. The atmosphere is tangible, the main character is lovable and mayhaps a tad naive, and the pacing keeps its momentum throughout. You'll be shown wonders, be frustrated, and have your heart touched. I read this for the first time with my spouse cause we both love the movie. But the book, in my opinion, is creepier and more magical. Even though it's categorized as a "kids" book it can be enjoyed by anyone that wants a fun (and at times unsettling) story of a girl that goes on an unexpected and relatable journey. (Zephyr)
