After I finished Tess of the d'Ubervilles from my high school's summer reading list, I closed the book and said to myself, "I am going to read all the Classics." I have read a lot of them, but I evolved and expanded my repertoire to include: biographies, memoir, recent fiction, poetry, manga, philosphy, history, and several other nonficiton genres. My favorite authors are: Haruki Murakami, Thomas Hardy, Virginia Woolf, John Steinbeck, Graham Greene, Jeannette Winterson, and Anna North. I belong to four book clubs, and I love how I get to encounter books I would never have known about otherwise.

The illustrations are glorious! Even the dogs curl up with a book in this wonderfully written story about a book-giving tradition in Iceland. Kilgore captures in light verse the experience of looking for the right book, which as book lovers know, i can be as much fun as reading. [Blanca]

Andrea Gentl is infectious with her passion for mushrooms. From broths to cocktails, Gentl organized her cookbook by meal time, so you can quickly find a recipe for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and the cocktail hour. Her recipes are infused with flavors from all over the world, which she has traveled as a photographer. I enjoyed learning techniques, and the risotto was delicious! [Blanca]

What I love about this baking book, aside from the mouth-watering pictures of each dessert, is how accessible Claire Saffitz created her recipes. No special tools needed, and each recipe has little troubleshooting Q&A's on the side. As a beginner myself, I felt encouraged and less intimidated to practice making desserts. [Blanca]

Murakami elaborates more on his writing career, where we only got glimpses of it in What I Talk About When I Talk About Running. He also goes into detail about his ideas of creativity, originality, and criticism. I'd say we haven't heard much from the East on the literary life, so this is a fresh perspective. I always enjoy Murakami's style. [Blanca]

Another spectacular book by Oliver Jeffers! The little dialogues he includes in the illustrations are hilarious, and I loved the parallel between space and time. By placing the distance between us and the planets in years, Jeffers gives us perspective on historical events that happened in a similar time in the past. It was a fun journey. [Blanca]

I was intrigued from the very beginning, and then I was enthralled when I realized Polk pays tribute to Marlowe's Faust, which I love. In the true spirit of Noir, this novella speeds past & takes sharp turns. [Blanca]

In this mix of personal essays, researched articles, and poetry, I found a powerful and validating argument to support my inner voice, especially in a world that persists to out-volume subjectivity. There were so many incredible subjectivities in this aptly curated anthology! [Blanca]

One of the most original books I've read in some time. Imagine a group of people who literally consume printed material and retain the information yet cannot read nor write. Sunyi Dean created these people and gave them a story and it is great! It is a unique portrayal of princesses, knights, vampires, and dragons. This is no ordinary fairy tale.[Blanca]

A lucid depiction of generational trauma--told in the perspective of the women, we witness the perpetuation of intentional and not intention hurt in the family. Pedersen gives us a poignant reminder of the power of personal myth. [Blanca]
