After I finished Tess of the d'Ubervilles from my high school's summer reading list, I closed the book and said to myself, "I am going to read all the Classics." I have read a lot of them, but I evolved and expanded my repertoire to include: biographies, memoir, recent fiction, poetry, manga, philosphy, history, and several other nonficiton genres. My favorite authors are: Haruki Murakami, Thomas Hardy, Virginia Woolf, John Steinbeck, Graham Greene, Jeannette Winterson, and Anna North. I belong to four book clubs, and I love how I get to encounter books I would never have known about otherwise.

I could not put this light novel down once I started it. I had to know how the protagonists played out their roles--and now I can't wait until the sequel comes out! I love a good marriage contract trope with strong characters. [Blanca]

I began each story in this debut collection with a question: where will it take me? Before I knew it, the destination became irrelevant as the journey was engrossing. The straightforward delivery accentuated the ordinary whilst the magical realism transpired and left me pondering.  [Blanca]

I stumbled upon this novel, and I am glad I picked it up. It is an underrated, wonderful piece of postmodernist fiction-challenging, demanding, and rewarding. I love being taught new words. I love it when authors invent new ones. Oreo and her family never cease to entertain! Hard to believe this book was published in 1974. [Blanca]

What a read! Beagin touches on some dark themes but in a tightly structured narrative full of ingenious metaphors and well-crafted literary allusions. Told from the perspective of a morally gray protagonist, Beagin makes us complicit with the narrator, who I totally liked. I was hooked from the first chapter, and if I find the time, I might re-read it. [Blanca]

I related to this book in several ways. I read Anne of Green Gables aloud to practice my English pronunciation. My assimilation also drew a wedge between my mother and me. I really enjoyed Lee's perspectives on pop culture, and I uttered several "oh my gods" at some of her remembrances. It also made me curious to read her novels, since she does delve a lot into her creative life. [Blanca]

I am not an outdoorsy person. Trees, birds, stars: they are vague and nameless entities in my mind. But this guide inspires me to venture out and learn how to identify species and constellations. Also, it fits in a backpack, which I assume, makes it easier to carry and reference on an adventure through nature. [Blanca]

What happens when inner-city kids suddenly awaken with a unique supernatural ability? Will they be able to elevate their people in the social hierarchy, protect each other from power-hungry moguls, and successfully navigate their evolving identities? I don't know, because this is the beginning of what seems a very intricate plot and very interesting characters. Epps and Haynes have successfully hooked my interest, and I can't wait for the sequel! I recently encountered an idea from an ethologist that animals, in fact, resemble us more emotionally than intellectually, but if animals could write in their own voice, I am certain these are the stories they would tell. Kolluri gives her narrators a depth of feeling through an understanding of language limited to their own experience. It's a testament to any sentient's ability for empathy, and it put my own through the ringer, especially with the polar bear's and whale's story. [Blanca]
