Adrienne

Growing up as a shy, nerdy kid in rural Central Washington, books were my escape. Once my parents thought they'd lost me, but I was just reading quietly in my room for a very long time. To this day, I read to explore and learn from experiences, cultures, and perspectives I might otherwise not encounter. I especially enjoy translated and international literature; sci-fi, fantasy, and other kinds of speculative ficiton; as well as sociology and history. While I love helping King's Books visitors get to know new books and authors, I equally love getting recommendations from you - please keep them coming!

Illyanna Maisonet is a force. She's a powerful writer and an incredible chef. Diasporican is a deeply personal collection of recipes that greatly expanded my familiarity with foods from the Puerto Rican Diaspora. I love that Maisonet doesn't shy away discussing the destructive influences of colonialism and includes headers like "Why the 2:1 Ratio Is Bullshit." I can't wait to continue cooking my way through the many, many recipes I've bookmarked! [Adrienne]

Besides reading, two things get me through the long, dark PNW winter: comfort food and comfort TV. This cookbook is the best of both worlds. It’s chock-full of references from the show that will please even the biggest Seinfeld fans. Worth getting for the jokes alone, the recipes are legitimately good too. I'll be bringing 'Hand Model Hand Pies' and 'Puffy Shirt Pastry Tarts' to my next holiday gathering! [Adrienne]

Let me tell you that I devoured this book. A murder mystery set in an Old West-inspired fantasy town, where the social order is based on the existence of angels & demons. In 200 propulsive pages, we learn how far our protagonist, Celeste, will go to protect the person she holds most dear: her younger sister. Plus, did I mention there are some (ahem) pretty steamy scenes between Celeste and her former demon lover? Yes, yes please to all of this. [Adrienne]

Having grown up in Central Washington, I've always felt a little shocked when folks are unfamiliar with Hanford. Too few know about the immense harm Hanford has caused to surrounding ecosystems and communities - particularly to Indigenous communities. This new book helps explain what is known and still unknown about this environmental disaster in our backyard, including the risks Hanford *continues* to pose. [Adrienne]

The most moving and insightful non-fiction I've read this year. Blending sociological theory and memoir, Fitzgerald shares her experiences as a sex worker, as a mother, as a human being coping with trauma. This book made me cry. It made me pump my fists in the air. It made me text my friends to tell them I love them. [Adrienne]
