Growing up as a shy, nerdy kid in rural Central Washington, books were my escape. Once my parents thought they'd lost me, but I was just reading quietly in my room for a very long time. To this day, I read to explore and learn from experiences, cultures, and perspectives I might otherwise not encounter. I especially enjoy translated and international literature; sci-fi, fantasy, and other kinds of speculative ficiton; as well as sociology and history. While I love helping King's Books visitors get to know new books and authors, I equally love getting recommendations from you - please keep them coming!

A book of positive affirmations and adorable illustrations that leave me feeling like I've just taken a nap in a field full of flowers under a warm sun. Maybe you need this book or maybe someone else in your life does. I know I'll be giving it to lots of friends. [Adrienne]

Sometimes you read a book that further opens your mind to the possibilities of what literature can look and feel like. 'Tauhou' contains multitudes, in its form (poetry, memoir, short stories) and its impact. In fact, I don't know that I've ever read an alternate history more compelling. Definitely looking forward to reading more from this talented young author. [Adrienne]

Build Your House Around My Body: A Novel By Violet Kupersmith Cover Image
$18.99
ISBN: 9780812983487
Availability: Special Order
Published: Random House Trade Paperbacks - July 5th, 2022

I'm so impressed by the execution of this ambitious novel--and it's a debut, at that. Kupersmith seamlessly weaves together different points of view, timelines, historical references, mythologies, and more. The result is a thoughtful and creative exploration of serious themes, such as sexual violence and the impacts of colonialism in Vietnam. For such heavy subject matter, Kupersmith still finds ways to inject humor and absurdity. I was fully immersed, beginning to end. [Adrienne]

For me, it’s difficult these days for a YA fantasy to stand out among the rest, but ‘Lucha’ has done it. The book first pulled me in with otherworldly forests & mushroom (!) magic. It completely won me over through its fast-paced adventure, strong sister bonds, and a sweet queer romance. [Adrienne]

For those who don't shy away from the weird, the bold, or the otherwordly: this one's for us. Asja Bakić has woven together a spectacular set of stories that push boundaries of genre. She twists sci-fi and mythology tropes to examine themes of gender, sexuality, the socio-politics of the Balkans, and more–all while being wildly entertaining. [Adrienne]

Reading this collection was an ethereal experience. Giada Scodellaro's writing is at times lyrical & abstract, other times incredibly precise & exacting in its material detail. A character in one story remarks: "I like being on the periphery of things.' As a reader, this is how I felt too - like floating on a cloud, on the outside looking in, being whisked through the air from scene to scene. [Adrienne]

This is a gorgeous book about a difficult topic: witnessing a loved one lose their memory. As someone with first-hand experience with this, it was a heartbreaking read, but Sylvia Molloy's prose is so beautiful and brilliant and full of love, I also found it healing. Jennifer Croft is also one of the best translators working today, in my opinion! [Adrienne]

I worked for 10 years at a nonprofit welcoming newcomers to Washington. During that time, I learned so much from folks who chose to share parts of their stories with me. Too often, newcomers are ignored, spoken over, or their stories are whitewashed by others to fit idealized versions of 'the immigrant experience' or 'the refugee journey.' This anthology is an opportunity to hear from newcomers in their own words about their own experiences. And the artwork accompanying each story is incredible! [Adrienne]
