Growing up as a shy, nerdy kid in rural Central Washington, books were my escape. Once my parents thought they'd lost me, but I was just reading quietly in my room for a very long time. To this day, I read to explore and learn from experiences, cultures, and perspectives I might otherwise not encounter. I especially enjoy translated and international literature; sci-fi, fantasy, and other kinds of speculative ficiton; as well as sociology and history. While I love helping King's Books visitors get to know new books and authors, I equally love getting recommendations from you - please keep them coming!

Let's Become Fungal!

Submitted by kingsbookstore on Thu, 11/02/2023 - 1:15pm

I've always been fascinated by mycelium and its role in ecosytems. This book offered me many new perspectives by exploring what we, as individuals and communities, can learn from these fungal networks. What might they teach us about building solidarity? How can they inspire us to imagine & create systems beyond our current social hierarchies? Drawing from a wide range of experiences and types of expertise, this insightful book will give you a lot to think about. [Adrienne]

Wow, I feel like this book is vibrating with a wild energy. It's as visceral and bold as it is intimate and moving. K-Ming Chang has masterfully crafted a surreal and mythical story that's firmly rooted in physical and bodily experiences. [Adrienne]

This anthology is stacked with talent. In twenty-seven stories we encounter dark forces both seen and unseen, exploring that which haunts or bolsters us from the beyond. I enjoyed stories from familiar favorites, as well as several authors who were new to me. This is why anthologies make such great gifts: they're an opportunity for readers to discover many new authors at once, serving as a jumping off point for much more reading to come. [Adrienne]

Omg yum! The Everyday Savory Chili Crisp is worth the price of admission alone. I was skeptical when the author suggested doubling the recipe, which already yields 4 cups, but I can admit when I'm wrong! Once you have homemade chili crisp in the fridge, you have a quick and easy shortcut to the most flavorful meals. In addition to soups, rice and noodle dishes, and other mainstays, I've also enjoyed experimenting with some of the less obvious chili crisp applications, like granola and shortbread cookies. Human Sacrifices is a wildly imaginative collection and reading it was perhaps the most haunting experience of my literary life. Consider this my top spooky season recommendation, although expect less "spooky" and more gothic, social, and existential horror. [Adrienne]

This book is a trip. It's an atmospheric, meandering noir with no particular end point and I found it compelling from the jump, almost perplexingly so. I'd say it's all vibes, but that would sell Cárdenas's wonderfully strange and spellbinding prose, as well as Davis's superb translation, far too short. I'm willing to bet it's unlike anything else you've read this year. [Adrienne]

I loved this chapbook-length collection of flash fiction. While I could have easily consumed it in one sitting, I instead enjoyed pulling this book out whenever I had just a few idle moments. All of the stories are inventive, and sometimes absurd, fantastic, or funny. For such spare writing, these stories hit above their weight in terms of depth and emotional impact. I also recommend checking out more from this cool small press. [Adrienne]

I've never kept up with new music well enough to pick a song of the summer, so I'm instead declaring 'Counterweight' my Book of the Summer! It's a fast-paced mystery that will appeal to fans of sci-fi and political thrillers alike. This is cinema on the page. I couldn't put it down and I bet you won't be able to either! [Adrienne]

Ordinary Notes By Christina Sharpe Cover Image

This book is extraordinary. One I'll undoubtedly think about and revisit for years to come. Written as a series of notes - sometimes autobiographical, always profound - Sharpe explores how Black life is experienced through art, literature, language, physical spaces, family, and more. As a whole, it's a deeply personal and radical sociological text. [Adrienne]

Dear reader, I read this book a year ago and I have NOT STOPPED thinking about it since—it's that remarkable. I've eagerly, and rather impatiently, awaited its US release, so I can share and talk about it with all of you. The ambiguous title 'Happy Stories, Mostly' perfectly distills the mix of melancholy, beauty, loneliness, and almost-joy found within. [Adrienne]
