Growing up as a shy, nerdy kid in rural Central Washington, books were my escape. Once my parents thought they'd lost me, but I was just reading quietly in my room for a very long time. To this day, I read to explore and learn from experiences, cultures, and perspectives I might otherwise not encounter. I especially enjoy literature translated to English from other languages; sci-fi, fantasy, and other kinds of speculative ficiton; as well as sociology and history. While I love helping King's Books visitors get to know new books and authors, I equally love getting recommendations from you - please keep them coming!

Gahhh Isaac Fellman is such a good writer. I seriously didn't make it four pages in before pausing to read a passage aloud to my partner. How he describes people and feelings, in particular, is so evocative and unique, yet also familiar - I know what he means instantly, even when I'd never in a million years be able to express something in the same way. Highly recommend this short book that's light on the fantasy, heavy on the emotional impact. [Adrienne]

This book is a conversation-starter and has me wanting to talk about it with all the artists & scientists in my life. [Adrienne]

This utterly engrossing book had me staying up past my bedtime and yet I never wanted it to end. Jimenez's storytelling is so evocative and moving it engages all of the senses. I felt the pain and fear and joy of our characters so vividly. This is epic fantasy at its very best. [Adrienne]

Samanta Schweblin is so adept at short fiction and she's at the top of her craft with this collection. I was captivated by these seven stories revolving around family and sense of place, including one of the most gut-wrenching and tragic portrayals of aging I've ever read. And with a low page count, there's no excuse not to devour this book immediately. [Adrienne]

This spooky YA novel set at an elite summer camp was a total page-turner. Our main character, Mars, is a clever, fierce, genderfluid teen on a mission to better understand their twin sister and the circumstances that led to her death. Equal parts psychological & body horror, sharp wit, and an earnest story about grief and sibling love. [Adrienne]

I *needed* this book right now. It's so many things: a pandemic text chronicling grief, disabled mutual aid, and survival; a celebration of crip skills, community, and love; a set of ideas and critical questions to help us work toward a radically disabled future. It's both practical and visionary, and certain to become Disability Justice canon. [Adrienne]

From the very first line, Saeed Jones' newest book of poetry is simply stunning. Jones writes about grief - personal and collective - with fury and vulnerability and incredible precision. I was particularly moved by the pieces that are revisited or continued throughout. Truly a remarkable collection as a whole. [Adrienne]
