Adrienne

Growing up as a shy, nerdy kid in rural Central Washington, books were my escape. Once my parents thought they'd lost me, but I was just reading quietly in my room for a very long time. To this day, I read to explore and learn from experiences, cultures, and perspectives I might otherwise not encounter. I especially enjoy literature translated to English from other languages; sci-fi, fantasy, and other kinds of speculative ficiton; as well as sociology and history. While I love helping King's Books visitors get to know new books and authors, I equally love getting recommendations from you - please keep them coming!

John Elizabeth Stintzi has achieved something truly remarkable with this book, which is one of my favorite novels of the year so far. It defies genre (sci-fi, mythology, literary fiction, & more!) and how they managed to blend and balance so many rich, compelling storylines is beyond me. Read it and you'll know what I mean! Fat Girls Hiking is a fat activism and outdoor community with chapters throughout the US & Canada. Outdoor rec is too often fat-shaming and exclusionary in a lot of ways -  I love what FGH is doing to make these spaces more inclusive and liberating. In this book, hear directly from FGH members who share personal stories, trail reviews, and practical advice for hitting the trail, whether you're new to hiking or a seasoned outdoor adventurer! Jawbone was one of the most gripping and unsettling books I've read in while. The story revolves around a group of upper-class teenage girls and one of their teachers. It's about the horror of becoming a woman, mother-daughter relationships, as well as a sort of meta-commentary on horror itself. This is the first English language translation of celebrated Ecuadorian author Mónica Ojeda and I can't wait for more translations of her work. [Adrienne]

Dead Collections is a whirlwind romance between an archivist vampire and a widow on a journey of self-discovery. Not only is Sol navigating "life" as a vampire, but as a trans man whose transition slowed after his death. This book is sharp, funny, sexy, and full of so much heart. And, you do not need to like vampire stories generally to fall in love with this book, as I did! [Adrienne]

Structured as a series of interview excerpts with employees - some human, some humanoid - on a doomed spaceship. Eerie, foreboding, and darkly comedic, this slim novel tackles big questions on the nature of work and being human. One of the most thought-provoking pieces of fiction I've read in a long time. This short, accessible, and super educational book examines the unique experiences of Mexican guest workers, migrants, and immigrants in the PNW and their enduring impacts on environmentalism, labor rights, immigrant rights, and the ag industry in our region. I learned so much! [Adrienne]

The unique form - a novel bordering on short fiction - and depth of this book blew me away. A group of friends are desperately trying to live lives of purpose, while they're also hurting and loving and making mistakes... and just trying to figure it all out. Highly relatable imo. [Adrienne]

How does someone write this beautifully?? A mother and adult daughter go on a trip abroad together. In this ostensibly simple storyline lies so much depth and nuance about relationships and family. If you're looking for a short but moving read, pick this one up. [Adrienne]

A sharp, darkly funny social satire focused on two friends who start a cult for 'problematic' men. The book also takes aim at the wellness industrial complex and more. At once absurd and way to real, I think Alex McElroy's debut novel is brilliant and I can't wait to see what they write next! [Adrienne]
