Reasons #1 to read; there are not enough books with black enby and trans characters. In this book, they are the focal point. Reason #2; this book is messy. And I mean that in the best way possible. Being a teen is messy. High school is messy. Being queer and in love and figuring out what that all means is messy. The writing is blunt that's necessary for a story with heavy issues like the ones presented here. This book can be a lot at times but at the end of the day the self love and friendships make this book shine. Perfect for people who like angst but still need an HEA. [Danielle]

Samanta Schweblin is so adept at short fiction and she's at the top of her craft with this collection. I was captivated by these seven stories revolving around family and sense of place, including one of the most gut-wrenching and tragic portrayals of aging I've ever read. And with a low page count, there's no excuse not to devour this book immediately. [Adrienne]

I was SO EXCITED for this stand-alone companion to 'Last Night at the Telegraph Club,' this one set in 2013 (unlike the 1950s of the former). It captures queer coming of age, the messy parts of teen life, identity, and of course love. Plus, that cover! [sweet pea]

What happens when inner-city kids suddenly awaken with a unique supernatural ability? Will they be able to elevate their people in the social hierarchy, protect each other from power-hungry moguls, and successfully navigate their evolving identities? I don't know, because this is the beginning of what seems a very intricate plot and very interesting characters. Epps and Haynes have successfully hooked my interest, and I can't wait for the sequel! Patti Smith is one of my favorite people to follow on Instagram. With her camera and her eloquent words it always feels like a unique stop on the scrolling journey. A Book of Days is one year of photos by Smith taken since 1996. Each day offers something new. Read it in a sitting or savor it over a year. Or both. [Karen]

I recently encountered an idea from an ethologist that animals, in fact, resemble us more emotionally than intellectually, but if animals could write in their own voice, I am certain these are the stories they would tell. Kolluri gives her narrators a depth of feeling through an understanding of language limited to their own experience. It's a testament to any sentient's ability for empathy, and it put my own through the ringer, especially with the polar bear's and whale's story. [Blanca]

The cats in these stories are all different. Like most cats in real life, they have their own perspective on the humans they adopt. I was deeply moved by each woman's tale and loved how they were all connected. [Blanca]
