2016 has been a great year for poetry. I am in love with Tyehimba Jess's Olio, Mary Ruefle's My Private Property, and Daniel Bortzutzky's The Performance of Becoming Human, but the book all my friends are talking about is this one by Ocean Vuong. He is young, but his poems are wise, filled with grief and loss and humanity and memory and a love undestroyed by war. [Kenny]

Published: Feiwel & Friends - November 8th, 2016

Tacoma’s own Marissa Meyer has taken the familiar world of Alice in Wonderland and put her own creative spin on it.  Appearances of both Wonderland favorites (Meyer’s Cheshire Cat is wonderfully snarky) and characters from fairy tale or nursery rhyme lure (like the repulsive Peter Peter and his beleaguered wife) provided a fun sort of literary scavenger hunt.  Anyone who likes magical worlds, colorful characters, and fairy tale retellings, will take delight in this twisty-turny reimagining full of tricks and surprises that belong to Meyer alone. I don't think there is a writer I've talked about more in 2016 than Elena Ferrante. Her Neapolitan novels are fiction at its best, fiery and fierce, brutal and beautiful. They are nearly perfect and I can't think of a customer I wouldn't recommend them to. Ferrante is an enigma, requesting anonymity from the world, so Frantumaglia is a huge gift. These essays and letters give us some access to her incredible mind and spirit. And anything she is willing to give, I will take. [Kenny]
