June 5  *  12 - 3 pm.  Book Arts Class: Soft Cover Journal Sewn Over Tapes.
Learn how to create soft cover books with multiple signatures using a basic binding method know as sewing over tapes. No glue required! This book structure is a good introduction for beginners and works great for journaling, as the pages lie flat when the book is open. Tools, paper and variations on this binding will also be discussed. Class fee is $30 and includes all material and supplies.  Pre-registration required.  Contact Mitzi Lindgren for registration information.

Mitzi Lindgren is a bookbinder, letterpress printer and artist. She combines her love of bookbinding, printing and surface design to create one of a kind artist books as well as edition bindings. Mitzi teaches bookbinding classes at various locations, including Green River Community College and the Arts Alive Gallery in Enumclaw. She was recently a presenter, teaching bookbinding as a part of the Pierce County READS 2010 program.  Her work has been shown in both juried and invitational exhibits throughout the Northwest and has been published in "The Art & Craft of Handmade Books."

June 10  *  7 pm.  Craft Night: Coptic Binding!

Tacoma Is For Lovers presents Craft Night! Each month features an artist introducing a new craft. The first 1 ½ hours will be devoted to learning the necessary techniques. After which, people can continue working on the activity or work on other projects. This month features Jessica Spring teaching Coptic bookbinding techniques! Coptic binding is characterized by book sections stitched together in a chain across the binding and attached to the cover. This method is prized as it allows books to lay flat and has a variety of uses, from artist books to scrapbooks. The $20 fee covers materials (paper, needles, string), plus a small donation to TIFL and King's Books. Please pre-register with sweet pea so that we know how many materials to bring!
