Anyone who has ever had to relocate as a kid can likely identify with Cat’s frustration when the family has to move away from all of her friends and the only home she has known.  To make matters worse, they are moving from beautiful, sunny Southern California to a colder, oceanside town in Northern California - where not only the climate is unfamiliar, but so is the prevalence of the ghosts who see their new town, Bahia de la Luna, as the perfect place to hang out!  Raina Telgemeier’s artwork and writing is lovely and engaging as she explores Cat’s and Maya’s approach to the ghosts, Maya’s illness, the big move, and the approach of the Dia de los Muertos celebration in their own ways. The beauty of it is that anyone, really, can relate to this story of family and the bonds of love that extend beyond the here and now.  [Lydia]

LeGuin’s short stories and novellas are a perfect entryway to her work. Many of her imagined worIds are interconnected, enjoyable in themselves and enhancing each other within these collections. They are groundbreaking in exploring gender, culture, and other big concepts. I once heard Ursula say she never had writer’s block. Now, we needn’t have reader’s block.  [Raissa]

It’s no secret that I am a geek of fairly infinite proportions.  There is something about magic, though, and fairy tale elements that hook me every time. The story itself is one that I am sure will become a new classic in the realm of magical coming of age tales. I loved this wildly imaginative new world and the cast of characters that inhabit it and took great enjoyment in the whimsy of the titles of the chapters (such as “In Which a Story Contains a Hint of Truth” and “In Which a Magical Child is More Trouble By Half”).        [Lydia]

I grew up in a number of places, so personally witnessed the soda/pop/sodee wars, but was still unprepared when I went to Wisconsin for college and people kept talking about bubblers. The what? These endlessly fascinating linguistic maps show the divides in our country are not just political. [sweet pea]

I have read many superhero comics but never spent any real time with Black Panther, but once I found out Ta-Nehisi Coates (Between the World and Me) would be writing the series, I knew it was a must read. Fierce and political, action-packed and tender, this book includes the first four issues of his brilliant run. Also, Brian Stelfreeze's art is a revelation. [Kenny]

Envelope Poems Cover Image

I love Emily Dickinson. Period. There has always been something that resonated with me about this woman who so clearly loved and had such an intense and private relationship with words, writing, and wit.  Obviously, I was intrigued by this collection of some of her “scraps” (as they have been known), as it provided not only the transcriptions of the included poems and notes, but also actual pictures of the original envelopes.  Some of these lovely, little poems take up only a segment of the flap of an envelope!  This visual enables the reader to take note of edits that Dickinson made, as well as the - always brilliant - finished piece.  The art of letter writing is largely lost to us in this age of digital correspondence; what will future generations have to look back on from our era? They will do better to pick up Envelope Poems, instead!  [Lydia]
