Sometimes I'll be reading a teen book and scream (usually internally, sometimes externally to the surprise of those around me): YES! This is a book we've needed. Hal Schrieve's latest is a wonderful, angsty, messy, powerful book about trans & queer teens figuring out life and possibly the secrets of the universe. Did I mention it's also based in the South Sound? [Adrienne]
What do you want from me? It's hockey and Rachel Reid. This was gonna be perfect no matter what. It's got all the wintery feels and (accurate) hockey excitement you want in a sports romance. It's also wholesome and sweet with no third act break up (something I hate). It's cozy and that's all I want. [Danielle]
This is a fun enemies-to-beards romance [becuz both parties in the arranged marriage hate each other, but then realize they are both queer and use it to their advantage]. Set hundreds of years after King Arthur, the kingdom is still steeped in the legacy, mysticism, and political intrigue of the past. Plus there is a great female knight, with shades of Alanna. An intriguing spin on Arthurian lore. [sweet pea]
Waiting for the water to boil, for the laundry to dry, for the cake to bake? Pick a title from this 'Soul Jar' and escape momentarily into a fantastic story. All of them are perfect company and will nourish your imagination. [Blanca]
A field guide that's not a field guide, but an ode to Cascadia through poetry, art, and 'creature stories.' Having heard some of the editors and contributors speak here in Tacoma earlier this year, I can attest to how much love and care went into crafting this collection. This is a special book full of wonder and admiration for our region. [Adrienne]
Look, this book is absurd but that's the point. Rom-coms are supposed to be zany with shenanigans out the wazoo and banter for days. Is it believable? Oh god no. Are the characters super likable? Hardly but what 40 year old capitalist is. TL;DR this a rom-com to a T. A ridiculous, fun escape. [Danielle]
A dark and gory horror book, and I loved it. It definitely pushes the boundaries of what is published today, but it is a valuable own voices brilliant narrative with vengeful ghosts, a disturbing house, and evil men. [Blanca]
I love books that expand our view on things that we interact with every day. This provides a lovely historical and even scientific insight into eyeliner; while also exploring the cultural and personal identity aspects in a personable fashion. An eye opening read for casual or professional users alike! [Zephyr]
Isle McElroy's debut was a sleeper hit and a personal fave. I've long-anticipated their sophomore novel, People Collide, and my-oh-my was it worth the wait. McElroy gives us all their usual wit, complex character development, and astute social observations, while revitalizing the familiar body-swap trope with themes of gender, sexuality, social class, and bodily autonomy. Simply superb. [Adrienne]
A therapeutic craft book! I didn't know I needed a rhinestoned shrimp on my wall until I checked this book out. Chockfull of positive vibes, it awakens the inner child, and now I can't see a jug as just a jug: everything can be art! [Blanca]
