Selections from the Rare Book Room
 The
Devil and the Grafter and How They Work Together to Deceive Swindle and
Destroy Men Women Society and Religion
by Clifton R. Woolridge
This book chronicles
the work of "The Incorruptible Sherlock Holmes of America".
Chicago's Clifton Woolridge was often cleverly disguised (see right)
during his work as a detective, seamlessly blending into crowds and
seedy gambling houses. He sought to catch criminals of all
stripes, including the "Terror of Cities: Reckless and Careless Women
Drivers". Photos in the front of the book show his many
disguises, such as that of 'Heck Houston: Stock Raiser from Wyoming' as
well as the places he had to visit to catch the unsavory denizens of
the underworld.
Book has slight edge wear. Boards rubbed slightly at corners and
spine and dirtied in two places (appropriately) by devil. Front hinge
starting. 1907. $95
