August 2006

linkStranger Things Happen by Kelly Link   (2001)

Link is brilliant.  Her stories spin the mundane into the bizarre.  From blonde aliens who smell like lemon- fresh Joy to a family who changes into black dogs, each one is hilarious and lovely.  Highly recommended author with an avid cult following.

kappaThe Kappa Child by Hiromi Goto   (2001)

Lustily recommended.  A stunning tale of kappas, cucumbers, alien abduction, and Laura Ingalls Wilder.  This novel follows four Japanese Canadian sisters who move to the arid prairies of Alberta to fulfill their father's dream of being a rice farmer.  A humorous and moving portrait of a family in transition.

tatianaDr. Tatiana's Sex Advice to All Creation by Olivia Judson   (2001)

This intriguing book, written as an advice column, explores the fascinating sex lives of a myriad of creatures, mostly invertebrates.  Filled with facts to awe your friends (and make them queasy), the book is very readable and quite captivating.

protectorProtector of the Small series by Tamora Pierce   (1999-2002)

First Test;  Page;  Squire;  Lady Knight

This spectacular series follows Kelady through her challenges as the first "official" girl page in Tortall.  While overcoming obstacles and protecting those being bullied, Kel is a great role model for girls (and boys).  Pierce is one of my favorite authors writing (ostensibly) for young adults.
