Michael Ruhlman's The Elements of Cooking is a great starting point for any home chef to explore essentials of cooking and to ramp up their game.  His main point of the differences between the skilled home chef and the pro sweating it out on the line is basically two words - veal stock.   If you basically learn to have this on hand and infuse your offerings with this wonderful base you'll improve your cooking and impress the most hardened foodie at your table.

Ruhlman also has a great webpage that's worth checking out. You'll find a wonderful entry about the changing aspects of the publishing world and the financing, advances and payments to authors, and how that world is quickly changing.  Although his situation is a little different then most authors -  culinary co-author of The French Laundry Cookbook with Thomas Keller, Food Network personality, friend to Bourdain,  his relationship with his publisher might foretell the future of the publishing world at least in respects to the place of authors within it.   Its a bit heavy on the numbers side but its a fascinating look into the book world that many don't get to see.   Its well worth a look.

Worlds in Harmony: Dialogues on Compassionate Action.  The Dalai Lama.

These fresh, spirited dialogues offer the reader deep insight into the nature of suffering, compassion, and liberation."  A fascinating account of a three day dialogue between the Dalai Lama and seven highly accomplished panelists addressing critical issues of our times.   As the Olympic Torch passes through San Francisco one is reminded of the Olympic spirit and the questions of Tibetan self rule.

Goddesses of the Celestial Gallery.  A beautiful folio sized full color look at Celestial Goddesses.  Absolutely stunning color illustrations.  This, along with many other Eastern Philosophy titles have just arrived from our British suppliers and are in stock.

readingReading Like a Writer by Francine Prose (2006)

Down to earth and lyrical advice on how the classics got written.  Wonderful book.  You might want to put that MFA off indefinitely and just take the world's greatest instructors home with you.  Learn to write like George Eliot and Tolstoy learned - by reading like a writer.

blue angelBlue Angel by Francine Prose (2000)

At the height of the multicultural wars, Prose wrote this gripping and very funny tale about a jaded creative writing instructor who doesn't heed all the warnings.  A writer's writer.

tiptreeJames Tiptree, Jr: The Double Life of Alice B. Sheldon by Julie Phillips (2006)

The science fiction world was rocked with the revelation (in 1977) that the multiple award-winning James Tiptree, Jr. was a woman.  Sheldon is an intriguing character, also leading lives as an artist, critic, and CIA analyst.  A comprehensive biography of the mother of feminist science fiction.  Hopefully, this book will spark a Tiptree revival and bring her work back into print.

magicMagic for Beginners by Kelly Link (2006)

New in paperback.  Reading this brilliant collection of stories is like having Pippi Longstocking as your best friend.  Splendid.  Quirky.  Fantastical, yet familiar.  Tales of the mundane made bizarre.  These stories give voice to the dreams you were afraid to tell others about.  Link is one of my favorite (and most recommended) authors.
