February 3  *  7 pm.  1980s Exercise Video Night!

IHAF Club hosts a night of nightmarish 80s fashion as we work out to videos of the era.  Raid thrift stores and plumb your parents' basement for videos!  A VCR (no beta, sorry!) will be on hand to showcase the wonders people find.  Please come dressed in the height of fashion, legwarmers & headbands are de rigeur!   

 

IHAF (Intermittent Health And Fitness) Club is a group of individuals concerned about your health.  Consisting of both lackadaisical and hardcore members, this open group meet intermittently to engage in fun fitness activities.  Future events may include double dutch and hulu hoop making/ spinning.  IHAF Club.  You join club?

February 11  *  7 pm.  Craft Night: Needle Felting!

Tacoma Is For Lovers presents their first Craft Night!  Each month will feature an artist who will introduce a new craft.  The first 45 minutes will be devoted to learning the necessary techniques.  After which, people can continue working on the activity or work on other projects.  This month features Miranda Pollitz who will introduce needle felting.  The $15 fee covers materials (needle, carded wool, foam pad) plus a small donation to TIFL and King's Books.  The project will focus on creating the felted bird featured in the book Little Felted Animals by Marie-Noëlle Horvath.  Participants should be age 12 and up.  Please pre-register with sweet pea so that we know how many materials to bring!

 

Tacoma Is For Lovers is a community-based organization which annually produces an Artist Craft Fair which promotes the visibility of local artists and encourages reuse, intentionality, sustainability and high craft.

February 12  *  7 pm.  Distinguished Writer Series and Open Mic.

This monthly event features a Distinguished Writer and an Open Mic for poets.  This month features Amalio Madueño.  Open Mic sign-up is at 6:30 pm. Admission is free. The event occurs monthly the second Friday of every month at King's Books. Sponsored by the Tacoma Arts Commission and the Puget Sound Poetry Connection.

 

Amalio Madueño is the former president of the Taos Poetry Circus and led their Mexican Bob's Poetry Camp.  He has published widely in journals across the United States and Europe.  His first full-length work, Lost In The Chamiso, was published in 2006.  A new collection of his poems, Bosque Stream, is due out Fall 2010.

 

 

February 13  *  10:30 am - 1 pm.  Poetry Workshop with Amalio Madueño.

Puget Sound Poetry Connection presents a poetry workshop, Imagination as Value: The Imaginative Horizon, facilitated by Amalio Madueño, visiting poet, writer, and instructor.  He will lead writing activities and exercises while discussing the place of poetry in contemporary American society, poetics theory and its roots, recent developments and influences.  Workshop will also cover a brief overview of contemporary poetics, poetry performance formats including spoken word, slams and bouts, etc. Includes specific discussion of poetics theory work by Olsen (Projective Verse), Stevens (The Necessary Angel), Fletcher (A New Theory), Blaser (The Fire), Rothenberg (Poetics & Polemics), Zukovsky (A Test of Poetry) and more.  Workshop fee is $15, payable at the workshop.  Please bring paper and pen, and cash or check for the workshop fee.  NOTE: This workshop has limited seating, so RSVP to Connie Walle to confirm your spot!

February 15 & 16Half Empty Film Shoot.

Old Loyal Films, a local indie movie company, will take over the bookstore to shoot the film Half Empty, directed by Andrew Finnigan with Andrew Forderer as Assistant Director. We'll be open for business as usual!  So stop on by.  They'll be shooting at the bookstore May 31st as well!  

 

Film synopsis: When Wes' marriage dissolves, he moves in with his best friend since childhood, Ray, but a sudden aneurysm puts Ray in a coma for weeks. Wes, despite himself, finds a sense of peace in the situation, but Ray's eventual return home strains their friendship as one friend clings to the past and the other focuses on the future.

 

 

 

February 16  *  7 pm.  Banned Book Club.

Join this explicit book group reading books that have been banned or challenged. February's selection is The Bookseller of Kabul by Åsne Seierstad.  Come join the discussion. February 16  *  6:30 - 9 pm.  Scrabble Rousers!

At UPS Rotunda, Wheelock Student Center

Calling Word Nerds and Scrabble Sharks! Get ready for a special Mardi Gras edition of Scrabble Rousers, a competition suitable for all levels. Participants establish their own skill level: beginner, intermediate, or expert. People are paired off to battle it out in two successive, exceedingly fun games. Entrance fee is $10 per person with proceeds directly benefit the Tacoma Community House Student Scholarship Fund, which assists students as they transfer from TCH to community college. Tacoma Community House is an 100 year old nonprofit that provides a variety of services to the community, including adult education, bilingual job assistance, and youth programming.

 

 

 

February 18  *  7 pm.  Civil Rights Discussion.

America in Solidarity presents their Third Thursday discussion.  Every month they will feature a speaker or panel to discuss an issue relevant to working families in Pierce County. February is a discussion about Civil Rights.  2010 is the 55th anniversary of the Montgomery Bus Boycott sparked by Rosa Parks.  How far have we come?  How far do we have to go?  Do Civil Rights still matter?  

 

America In Solidarity is a grassroots effort of working Americans to focus our country's politics and economics on the necessity of job security, workplace safety, health care, wages and protection of the American worker from the Homeland threat of corporate greed.

 

 

 

February 19  *  7 pm.  Ethics of Permaculture Talk. 

Sustainable Tacoma-Pierce presents on ongoing series of open-to-the-public presentations in conjunction with their Tacoma Permaculture Design Course.  This month features Kelda Miller, a Pierce County permaculture designer, speaking on "The Ethics of Permaculture" Permaculture is distinct from other design systems by having a strong grounding in ethics. Learn how these ethics shape work locally, and globally, to have an impact that truly empowers people and restores ecosystems.  Cost is a sliding scale, $10 - $5, although students in the permaculture course pay no extra fee.   

 

 

 

February 27  *  2 - 5 pm.  Inclusiveness in Permaculture Talk.
Emet Değirmenci presents a talk on "Inclusiveness in Permaculture".  The session will have two parts.  In the First Session, Değirmenci will introduce the multicultural aspects of permaculture.  She will relay her experiences from New Zealand where she lived and developed a sustainability project, Innermost Gardens, which introduced the concepts of permaculture to refugees and new migrants.  We'll show a short film about Innermost, followed by a discussion.  The Second Session will consist of dividing into small groups for a brainstorming session.  They will then go back to the larger group where a discussion on how to design permaculture projects that consider other cultures and populations will ensue.  Cost is a sliding scale of $10 - $15.           

 

Emet Değirmenci was born in a village in a rural part of western Turkey.  Through her participation in the traditional community planting and harvesting festivals, she found her love for stewardship and community and has been sharing her experience and vision ever since. An accomplished geophysical engineer for 14 years, she decided in 1997 to invest her studies and efforts around healthy and sustainable community building and completed her first permaculture course.  She's had 15 years of extensive work in the field of permaculture-based organic community gardening.  Emet now lives on Vashon Island and is working on many projects from climate justice, gender studies to urban community gardening.  All these projects involve permaculture principles, community building goals and standards, and great healthy food and connection through land and food production.
