Upcoming Events

September 8  *  7 pmA Force More Powerful Film Showing.
Veterans For Peace will show A Force More Powerful (2000).  This docume
ntary explores one of the 20th century's most important but least understood stories: how nonviolent power has overcome oppression and authoritarian rule all over the world.

Veterans For Peace is a national organization with chapters around the country, including Tacoma. They draw on their personal experiences and perspective gained as veterans to raise public awareness of the true costs and consequences of militarism and war - and to seek, and encourage, the search for peaceful, effective alternatives to war.

September 9  *  7 pm.  Craft Night: Fused Silk Design!

Tacoma Is For Lovers presents Craft Night! Each month features an artist introducing a new craft. This month features Miki Hayes teaching Silk Fusion!  This process creates a sheet of fabric that can be sewn, used as decorative paper, or sculpted into other designs.  After separating strands of silk, one can interlace the fibers on a screen, dampen them, and add a fabric medium to set the work.  Participants can bring small, thin, flat materials to work into their piece (flower petals, parts of feathers, etc) or use the ones provided.  The $20 fee covers materials, plus a small donation to TIFL and King's Books.  Please pre-register with sweet pea as class size is limited.

Tacoma Is For Lovers is a community-based organization which annually produces an Artist Craft Fair which promotes the visibility of local artists and encourages reuse, intentionality, sustainability and high craft.

September 10  *  7 pm.  Distinguished Writer Series and Open Mic.

This monthly event features a Distinguished Writer and an Open Mic for poets.  This month features poet Justen Ahren, followed by an Open Mic open to all poets.  Sign-up is at 6:30 pm.  Admission is free.  The event occurs monthly the second Friday of every month at King's Books. Sponsored by the Puget Sound Poetry Connection and the Tacoma Arts Commission.

Justen Ahren lives on Martha's Vineyard, a small island off the coast of Massachusetts.  He runs a poetry reading series, teaches poetry, and is founder and director of the Martha's Vineyard Writers Residency.  For the past several winters he has been traveling to and writing in Latin America. These travels have greatly influenced his current collection of poetry, Gone. Justen received his MFA in Creative Writing from Emerson College, Boston.

September 11  *  11 am.  Stadium District History Talk & Book Signing.

Join us as we celebrate the release of the book Tacoma's Stadium District by Joy Keniston-Longrie, Kelsey Longrie, and Amberose Longrie.  The book chronicles the development of the neighborhood from old-growth forests to the Stadium District we know today.  Starting with the 1873 telegram from Northern Pacific Railroad commissioners stating, "We have located terminus on Commencement Bay," the Stadium District became a place that railroad tycoons, timber barons, industrial leaders, and everyday people built their homes and raised their families.  The magnificent Stadium Bowl anchors the neighborhood as an important gathering place and the steep spires of Stadium High School have inspired thousands of Tacomans for more than a century.

Joy Keniston-Longrie's family arrived in Tacoma in 1884 and includes five generations of Stadium High School graduates spanning more than 100 years, including co-authors Kelsey & Amberose Longrie (Stadium High classes of 2010 and 2014, respectively).  Joy will be talking about the process of researching and selecting photographs for the book, as well as signing copies.
