Inara Verzemnieks will talk about her new book, Among the Living and the Dead: A Tale of Exile and Homecoming on the War Roads of Europe. Part memoir, part history, the book is a deeply immersive narrative of family and nation, loss and memory. Verzemnieks was raised by her grandparents, Latvian refugees of World War II who had resettled in Tacoma, WA, among fellow expatriates. After the Iron Curtain fell and her grandmother passed away, Verzemnieks went looking for the family and homeland that war had deprived her. Among the Living and the Dead is an outstanding debut work, weaving reporting and myth to craft a moving account of love, loss, and survival.
