Join Commencement Bay Haiku at this monthly meeting open to the public. We ask participants to bring a page of 3-5 haiku or one page of haibun (prose with haiku) to read as we give constructive suggestions to each other. In addition, we discuss various aspects of haiku, haibun, or haiga (a painting, sketch or photo with haiku). Sometimes, we will have special guests do presentations. We admire haiku written in one-, two-, or three lines of 17 syllables or less. Some of the steps to writing a successful haiku are: to juxtapose two images, allude to seasons, express restrained emotion, and leave room for the reader. We meet the second Tuesday of every month.
Commencement Bay Haiku began with three members in September 2011: Judt Shrode, Jim Westenhaver, and Carmen Sterba. We have strong connections with Haiku Northwest and the Haiku Society of America.
