I'm a little obsessed with this picture book. Matilda is so good! Hans is so naughty! Cute, big illustrations are highly appealing. A surprising plot twist adds flavor. Every kid has a little Matilda and a little Hans in them!

trying to train myself to like short stories and this collection
definitely advances my cause.I love the diversity of stories told, with
different types of people and situations. It's a multifaceted view of
contemporary Nigeria. Barrett is great at giving a sense of place and
fully fleshing out his characters. I'm looking forward for more to come from him.
I'm a fan of Lauren Beukes after the awesome Zoo City. I love that this novel tackles different genres: serial killer, time
travel, and haunted house. The story is constantly being told in
different times about different people. I can see how this could be
frustrating, but i loved it. The worst parts, and this isn't really a
spoiler, were the demises of the shining girls. I want whole novels
about them as living womyn. This is a challenging read that should
appeal to a wide swath of readers.
This book collects volumes 4-6 of this graphic novel series showing a
slice of life in Côte d'Ivoire (west Africa) in the late 1970s. I wasn't
completely sold on this series until the third book. This collection continues the
story in interesting and humorous ways. Of particular joy to me were
Innocent's adventures and his lady clones. All kinds of issues are
explored in this collection, making it ripe for discussion!
graphic novel is so stinkin' cute. Hilda is a great lead character, a spunky,
adventuring girlchild. You think the salt-lions and the rat-king are
cute until you see the super, super cute Bird Parade, which i would love
to attend. A sweet, fun story for all ages.
This two-book set is an interesting examination of the Boxer Rebellion from the perspective of a young Boxer (Boxers) and a young Christian (Saints). Their interwoven stories don't provide answers, but they do make for interesting reading and discussion! The art is gorgeous, as to be expected from Yang. The interplay between living and mythic characters is compelling. My main problem with Saints is the appearance of a raccoon. How'd a raccoon end up in China? My point exactly.
Not a who's who, this mind-blowing book is nothing less than a revisioning of American history. I decided i wasn't going to take notes, but midway through the first chapter i had to go back and start jotting down facts. Rife with historical heroes we should all be celebrating, this book is vital reading for anyone interested in history.
I practically specialize reading about sassy girls. This collection has some of the most bad-ass girls i've had the pleasure to read. Each of the stories is a quick glimpse of a day or two into the lives of some amazing characters. Whenever a girlchild is the narrator, the voice is strong, strong. It's really a pleasure to read Toni Cade Bambara. I'm generally not a short story reader, so this collection is definitely something special.
summer read. Parts of it had me laughing out loud. Hard to tell which is funnier: the performance art pieces or the messed-up lives of the Fang children as adults. Smart and hilarious.
