I’m a card carrying Blerd (i.e. Black Nerd) who geeks out on fantasy & fairy tales, Battlestar Galactica, Star Wars, Luke Cage, Buffy, & Firefly. I’ve fought many battles on Grammar Hill to defend the Oxford comma. I’m a playwright & poet who believes in the power of good & the necessity of books! I love Octavia Butler, Lynn Nottage, Neal Schusterman, Shakespeare, Maya Angelou, & Ilona Andrews. As a recovering Marvel & DC addict, I’m currently on a break from comics, though Saga and Rat Queens are still my jam.

I love Emily Dickinson. Period. There has always been something that resonated with me about this woman who so clearly loved and had such an intense and private relationship with words, writing, and wit.  Obviously, I was intrigued by this collection of some of her “scraps” (as they have been known), as it provided not only the transcriptions of the included poems and notes, but also actual pictures of the original envelopes.  Some of these lovely, little poems take up only a segment of the flap of an envelope!  This visual enables the reader to take note of edits that Dickinson made, as well as the - always brilliant - finished piece.  The art of letter writing is largely lost to us in this age of digital correspondence; what will future generations have to look back on from our era? They will do better to pick up Envelope Poems, instead!  [Lydia]

Tacoma’s own Marissa Meyer has taken the familiar world of Alice in Wonderland and put her own creative spin on it.  Appearances of both Wonderland favorites (Meyer’s Cheshire Cat is wonderfully snarky) and characters from fairy tale or nursery rhyme lure (like the repulsive Peter Peter and his beleaguered wife) provided a fun sort of literary scavenger hunt.  Anyone who likes magical worlds, colorful characters, and fairy tale retellings, will take delight in this twisty-turny reimagining full of tricks and surprises that belong to Meyer alone.
