I want the entire world to be novels and poetry and protest songs. I will read anything by Kazuo Ishiguro, Haruki Murakami, Louise Glück, Flannery O’Connor, Cormac McCarthy, Claudia Rankine, Hilton Als, Wendell Berry, Jack Gilbert, and Anne Carson.

A story of music history and race - some horror and some shocking twists.  Its beauty and its brutality blindsided me- thankfully.  Plus, the title makes it fun to read in public. [Kenny]

A smart and experimental book about superheroes for people more interested in philosophy, art, race, and enduring friendships, and - well, I guess superheroes, too!  [Kenny]

I stayed up until 4 a.m. three nights in a row to read this.  I couldn't put it down. Brutal and honest, asking how we make a home in a country not our own.  I love these characters.  I cannot let go of this story!  - Kenny

I have read many superhero comics but never spent any real time with Black Panther, but once I found out Ta-Nehisi Coates (Between the World and Me) would be writing the series, I knew it was a must read. Fierce and political, action-packed and tender, this book includes the first four issues of his brilliant run. Also, Brian Stelfreeze's art is a revelation. [Kenny]

Anne Carson is one of our finest living poets. Her work is erudite and elegant while remaining intensely moving and personal. She is always innovative and new and Float is no exception. This box of twenty-two mini books is made to be taken apart and read in any order, poems, essays, plays, and more. It is dizzying and playful and always beautiful. [Kenny]

2016 has been a great year for poetry. I am in love with Tyehimba Jess's Olio, Mary Ruefle's My Private Property, and Daniel Bortzutzky's The Performance of Becoming Human, but the book all my friends are talking about is this one by Ocean Vuong. He is young, but his poems are wise, filled with grief and loss and humanity and memory and a love undestroyed by war. [Kenny]

I don't think there is a writer I've talked about more in 2016 than Elena Ferrante. Her Neapolitan novels are fiction at its best, fiery and fierce, brutal and beautiful. They are nearly perfect and I can't think of a customer I wouldn't recommend them to. Ferrante is an enigma, requesting anonymity from the world, so Frantumaglia is a huge gift. These essays and letters give us some access to her incredible mind and spirit. And anything she is willing to give, I will take. [Kenny]

My expectations were very high after reading and rereading and loving Maria Semple's Where'd You Go, Bernadette and this seriously funny and seriously smart follow-up totally lived up to my expectations. This is one of my favorite books of the year. Top five, for sure. I loved every minute I got to follow around the narrator, Eleanor Flood. And just when I thought I knew what was going to happen—BAM—the unexpected. [Kenny]

Carson Ellis has illustrated a few of my favorite books so I always take notice when she does something new. In this beautiful picture book she has created an entire bug language that you and your child can translate together. Not knowing exactly what the bugs are saying makes it the job of our imaginations to fully realize this wonderful story. [Kenny!]
