I think often of my diasporic body and seek work that deals with the same: questions of home, problems of language-and-or-lack-thereof, memory, longing, survival, salt. I have a professed interest in translation (both works in and theory of), and a penchant for words that begin with p. Partial to: declarations from those in the margins, short stories, speculative fiction and worlds a touch absurd, Alejandra Pizarnik, Ocean Vuong, Anne Carson, Octavia E. Butler, Clarice Lispector.

Savor this. Truong, inspired by a fleeting mention of two “Indo-Chinese” cooks in The Alice B. Toklas Cook Book, crafts a sensuous fictional memoir told from the perspective of a Vietnamese man living in Paris. The premise alone—to turn a minor footnote into a whole story, a whole life—is a wonderful play on power, but everything about this book is subversive. Nonlinear and queer with so much to say about language, I will forever recommend this book. [Tanya]

Gorgeous, clean prose presented in eight connected essays—the last of which (the titular) comprises the latter half and more. Abandon as in deserted. Abandon as in to yield oneself completely. Emotional truths are interwoven with mythology, pop culture, history, and philosophy. The result is, at its core, an unflinching and intellectual examination of identity. [Tanya]

Each of these stories is a bracing reward. Required reading for lovers of contemporary magical realism. And more so: Arimah offers a dazzling range of myth and fable, science fiction, realism, even horror. This is a stunning debut collection. [Tanya]

A meditation on the color blue (and love, loss, obsession…) in the form of numbered propositions (memoir rendered lyrical, philosophical…). You want to own Bluets because you will want to re-read it, and with every re-reading you’ll discover something different—about yourself, maybe, about Nelson’s subtleties, absolutely. Something you’ll want to tell all your friends about while also harboring as your own secret. [Tanya]

I know-what interest does a PNWer have in the umbrella? If you're a literary nerd, trust me: get this book, or gift this to someone who is. From Dickens to Derrida, from status symbol to emblem of impoverishment, Rankine's tour of all things brolly is dutifully researched and so much fun. [Tanya]

Fast-paced, with a strong protagonist. Female-centered, including a queer character. Fabiola stays true to her values and spiritual beliefs as a young Haitian immigrant while navigating her new life in Detroit. Love the elements of magic realism and Haitian Vodou. [Tanya]

These eight short stories revolve around women, and the violence visited upon women's bodies. The first, "The Husband Stitch," (finalist for the Nebula and Shirley Jackson awards), is a total knockout. The collection is sexy and dark, with elements of fable, horror, comedy, and science fiction. Very queer. Really, it's all those things and it feels as timely as ever. [Tanya]
