Banned Books Week

The Annual Celebration of the Freedom to Read

September 27 - October 4

Banned Books Week is an annual event that seeks to raise awareness about the issues surrounding censorship, intellectual freedom, and freedom of the press.  Celebrated the last week of September, BBW began in 1982 and is co-sponsored by the American Library Association in conjunction with other organizations, including the American Booksellers Association.  In 2006, there were 420 official challenges to books, although the number of unreported challenges is much greater.  Books are challenged for such reasons as being “sexually explicit”, “promoting homosexuality”, “unsuited to age group”, and “occult themed”.  For a list of the most frequently challenged books of 2007, click here.

Banned Books Week in Tacoma is co-sponsored by King's Books, Pierce County ACLUPierce County Library System, the UPS Library, and Tempest Lounge All events are at King’s Books unless otherwise noted.
